Mires Inspires Utd. to Victory

Unicorn Phoenix 2 - 5 Communities United U10       Saturday 27/01/07

Possibly the best performance of the season by a player was made by Joe Myres this Saturday. A poor season for him by his standards last season seemed to have been put behind him, as he hit a hat-trick to inspire Utd. to a well deserved victory.

Utd. started brightly having a large percentage of the possession and a few good saves from the Unicorn keeper, from the on fire Sam Brunt, was the only thing stopping Utd. You would have thought at some point Utd. were going to stretch their legs in this top v bottom clash but an unlikely goal at the start of the second third from Unicorn stunned everyone. A speculative shot from the Unicorn midfielder lobbing goalkeeper Thomas Taylor from outside the box.

Utd. were still the dominant force in this game despite being 1-0 down but then an even more bizarre thing happened. Taylor in the goal was watching a dribbling shot go wide only to discover it was on its way into the bottom corner. A poor goal and a distraught keeper. Cue the introduction of Joe Myres. Having arrived late Myres started on the bench but once he came on for the ineffective Ollie Harrison on the right, he quickly made his mark on the game. A snatched shot beating the keeper at his far post started a great fight back by Utd. Myres was looking dangerous now and Utd. really started playing. They were winning high balls and playing some great stuff all around the pitch and you could just sense the onslaught coming.

Again it was the fantastic Joe Myres. A bit part player for most of the season who seems to have finally screwed his head on and knuckled down to gain a place in the team. He was chasing the ball down all over and making runs at goal and again he was rewarded with a fine finish to level up at 2-2, beating the keeper on a one on one.

The final third was as to be expected in this game, bizarre. Lawrence Taylor was apparently ill in bed at home only to turn up with his kit on to play his part in the final third of the match. Immediately he was in the thick of it and seemed to give Utd. some much needed composure in the middle of the park. He fed the ball around to the wide players and then the breakaway began. Joe Myres poking the ball past the goalkeeper to make it 3-2 to the away side and nearly getting himself booked for the elaborate shirt off celebration, the pictures will be interesting!

Utd. now went in to cruise control with Sam Brunt finally getting a deserved goal and Oliver Harrison getting on the score sheet after some fine defensive work from Max Momber at the back.

A well deserved victory for Utd. who can now claim the League title with Fletcher Moss losing 2-1 away the week before. An exciting end to the season is now anticipated by all.

Man Of The Match: Joe Myres.
Scorers: Joe Myres (3), Sam Brunt and Oliver Harrison.
