Super Mooney Goes Ballistic, Ashton Are Atrocious!Communities United 4 - 3 Ashton on Mersey 'A' Saturday 21/04/07
An inspiring performance from Joe Mooney and some fantastic team play were enough to see off Saturday’s opponents in the Supplementary cup. The team United will face in the League cup final fought hard but were unable to beat this strong United side at home.
United came out of the blocks early on in the game with a goal Arsenal would be proud of. Some great one touch football between Ollie Harrison, Joe Mooney and Lawrence Taylor set Joe Mooney away to finish low into the bottom corner. This was now game on, as Ashton managed to pull one back through a long ball up the park by their keeper. This tactic was being used for most of the game by Ashton and it seemed to good effect, until the big captain Max Momber got into his stride.
United then went ahead again through the magnificent Joe Mooney. He was running all over and causing the opposition all sorts of problems and was unlucky not to score a couple more. Some great passing and movement from United ripping Ashton apart to go ahead and make it 2-1. Again though Ashton fought hard and got an equalizer to take the game to 2-2 at the end of the first third.
United were really enjoying themselves now. The football they were playing at times was unbelievable. The passing was good, the movement was good, but most of all the fight and team spirit carried United through this fantastic game. United went ahead again through Joe Myers with a lovely cut back across the goal with his left foot. Myers, also known as ‘the predator’ was there to pick up the scraps and sink Ashton again.
United were warned at the break to finish Ashton off and so they did with a sublime piece of skill from hat-trick hero Joe Mooney. Mooney took the ball down in the centre circle and strolled past two Ashton players to take a shot from the edge of the area into the bottom right, to give United some much needed breathing space.
United went into the final third leading 4-2 but were punished late on in the final third after a lapse in concentration through events off the field. Ashton were pushing United hard again and were it not for goalkeeper Thomas Taylor they could have got back in the game. The long balls were now coming thick and fast but as ever the man mountain Max Momber cleared his lines well. Ashton did manage to pull one back towards the end but United hung on for a much deserved victory.
United now look forward to the next round and a very competitive final against Ashton on May 13th.
