Utd. Win League CupCommunities United 3 - 1 Ashton On Mersey 'A' Sunday 13/05/07
Communities United ended their second season as footballers by winning the League Cup. A fantastic game bringing an end to what has been a bit of an up and down season all around.
The first third saw very shaky play from United. Their nerves seemed to be getting the better of them and keeper Thomas Taylor was called into action a few times early on from the legendary long ball, that was being used by Ashton On Mersey. Taylor found himself making a fantastic double save at one point. The long ball bounced awkwardly for him coming off the wet surface so he pushed the ball into the air which then made its way back down towards him with strikers closing in. But Taylor some how managed to claw the ball away.
United were riding their luck though and eventually it ran out. A long kick up field by the Ashton keeper being guided over the helpless United keeper Taylor. United then kicked into action. Oliver Harrison came on wide right for the nervous Samuel Brunt and immediately made a telling contribution with a tap in coming from a throw in. Lawrence Taylor took the throw, which was headed onto the back post by Dean Musa for Harrison to tap in from close range, ending his season tally as top scorer with eleven goals.
The score was now 1-1 with the second third underway and it was United who now looked the most likely to take the cup home. Ashton’s long balls were still causing United problems but after a re-shuffle by the management in positions, they soon had the upper hand. Darragh Collomb made way for Joe Myers who also made a great impact on proceedings. The little striker was running all over causing menace for the Ashton defence. United still had a job to do with Ashton but they seemed to cope much better now with Mooney dropping deeper.
Along came the Lawrence Taylor Show!
Taylor was lurking around the centre circle and along came a half chance to hit a volley, and hit it he did. The technique was fantastic. The ball dropped to him and he slammed it home from the half way line into the bottom left corner past the Ashton keeper who had no chance. Ashton replied with a shot coming of both posts, which somehow United managed to keep out, but they hung on to go in at 2-1.
The final third now became a little tenser. Both teams knew the next goal was important and it was Ashton who wanted it more. Still though United managed to put a short passing sequence together for the fantastic Lawrence Taylor to smash home from the edge of the area. United finished the game largely in control and celebrated what was a great day and a great game. Well done to all the players for providing everybody with a great match and a great day.

Utd Out After Real Battle!Stretford Victoria 'B' 5 - 4 Communities United U10's Saturday 28/04/07
Communities United were dumped out of the supplementary cup this weekend in a hard fought game which ended with both sides appreciating the football. Two totally different styles were on display but it was the away teams tactics which worked best this day on a poor pitch.
United were yet again exposed to high balls in dangerous areas and failed to deal with them. The grass was long and so it was hard to play any real football but at the end of the day Stretford Vic’s got their tactics spot on and won this enthralling game.
The game started with an early goal against the run of play for Vic’s. The long ball was played over the top for their powerful striker to slot home past the exposed Taylor in the net. United quickly pulled one back though through Oliver Harrison. A great piece of passing through the heart of the Vic’s defence for Harrison to slot home with a slide at the back post, injuring himself in the process.
The first third ended all square with United playing the better stuff on the floor and not getting the rewards. At the start of the second third United started to tire. The grass was long and they started to struggle with their passing. Vic’s stuck to their tactics and they paid off. Some good long range passing and great work up front by their energetic striker proving too much for United and they made the game 3-1. A double save from Thomas Taylor was enough to spur United on towards the end of the second third and give them some much needed belief going in at the break.
The final third was something of a mystery. United stepped up a gear. Everyone was pushing forward and working hard as a real team. They fought for every ball together and every player was full of encouragement for each other. Joe Myers was first to start the fight back. He slotted home from close range to make the score 3-2 and give United some real belief. United were quickly undone though in this game and again they were punished by the long ball reaching the lad up front for Vic’s to finish from close range and make it 4-2.
United were not going to give up easily though. They managed to fight back with a superb strike from Lawrence Taylor on the edge of the area. But with United so committed in attack they conceded yet again to make it 5-3. Still though heads did not go down. So much so, that Musa was nearly booked for being over aggressive after watching his teammate being tackled unfairly. Then came another great piece of skill from Joe Mooney to run past his man and round the keeper for Dean Musa to ensure the ball hit the back of the net.
Despite all their fighting spirit United could not beat Vic’s who were a credit to this entertaining game. United now look forward to the League cup final on May 13th against Ashton On Mersey which is guaranteed to be a great game after United put them out of the supplementary cup two weeks ago.
Man of the Match: Dean Musa Scorer(s): Oliver Harrison, Joe Myers, Lawrence Taylor, Dean Musa.
